I've used the 'B' function for stopping my car in the winter. I live in Michigan and our roads can get pretty crappy. It can really help you stop when you're starting to slide through stop lights and stuff like that. Being that the Prius is lighter than other cars, this is a great function, but I've never used it to just drive in. That would drive me crazy the way it slows you down constantly. But it is awesome for winter driving.

Well, I've finally taken the plunge. Just sold my 1999 Rangerover 2.5TD for a pittance (£5000) and bought a 2005 T-spirit with 40,000 on the clock for £11,500.

The Rangerover with it's air suspension and beatiful road holding will be missed - but not the MPG it did - which was 25 on average :-(

As a careful driver and one who understands the principles of the Prius I'm looking forward to attaining around 55 MPH - time will tell.

Mum's Auto Yaris does 33 around town - and for such a small car nothing special.

Wish me luck!

Sorry this is a little off topic, but if you run out of gas will the car run as an EV until the batteries run out? Just Curious.

I drove from Newport Beach, CA to San Jose, CA on $31.00 worth of gas last week. I gassed up the Prius in Newport in the morning, drove around the beach for about 1 hour and then drove north on HWY 1 to the 101 to San Jose.
It was incredible..I was amazed at how I was able to get from Newport Beach to San Jose on $31.00 worth of gas. That was about 500 miles of driving.

I was down to my last gas bar on the Prius when I arrived in San Jose.

Oh No, say it ain't so.

I don't like the new Prius, it's way too exciting looking and not at all what a fuel efficient car should look like.

I don't want a sports car. I want a basic functional car that gets excellent gas mileage.

I even hate that color. I like brown, silver and light gray. Black, red, blue, yellow ...all are way too flashy for my likes.

please, Toyota, don't change the Prius, keep it the same. I don't take change very well.

Well, the reason being that Prius is more of a car than Yaris yet it still gets a much better mileage ( how about 20 more miles per gallon?). Not sure what an a2 means.
Besides, what do you mean by no knowledge? It's a gasoline engine paired to an electric one, both well known subjects.
My Prius is at 52,000 miles (83200 kilometers) and still "solid" using your terminology. Not a SINGLE mechanical or other issue so far.
I've used 1029 gallons of gas (50.5 MPG) compared to 1625 gallons(32 MPG) I would have spent in a tiny Yaris. It's almost $2,000 less gas I've spent and easier on the environment. You do the math.

it seems stupid to go out and buy a hybrid when the knoledge we have on them today are to limited compaired to any other type of engine. I dont see why people dont just buy a small car like a yars or a2 which gets just as good gas mileage but you can be certin that it is going to be solid for more than you might estimateon the prius. if you want to be clean one might even go for one of those new clean diesels that volkswagen and mercedies benz has. also the prius is ridicilously ugly. It might have many advantages but now days it is tough to say go buy a hybrid when you can just get a fuel efficient car.

Comment on 2007 Prius Battery Level Indicator by Mike Cohn

I've driven many, many Priuses (don't ask, don't tell) and can assure you the slight variety in the battery ranges people experience are normal.

One person said they are usually in the green while many report they are in the blue. Being in the green all the time, by default is a little unusual, but it does happen with some cars and recalibration results in nothing but wasted time.

Over time, many of those "always green" cars eventually settle into the blue range anyways.

As for "bob" who got "red" literally and figuratively, when you go up REALLY steep grades that are REALLY LONG, it will drain the battery to the purple level.

Even though it's designed to accomodate that kind of drain/fill cycle, I wouldn't want to do that DAILY over a 10 year ownership cycle.

Batteries don't wear out from occasional spikes, they wear out from extreme and continuous spikes and loads (expend/regen) like sugar levels and pancreases.

Imagine a fat blob of a man who stuffs face with sugars, fats and starches all day long and keeps taking diabetes and heart disease meds but does nothing to change the diet, lack of exercise or the emotions that keep him in his cycle.

Even though the meds are helping for now, there will eventually be weaknesses that the meds can't help and ultimately he will die.

The same analogy goes for the Prius battery - there are all kinds of checks and balances (meds) already in the vehicle that counteract the negative effects of severe and frequent discharging/recharging.

But don't keep doing it just because the manufacturer's reputation makes you think its ok (like meds). Change your behaviors, your driving routes (if possible) and your emotions behind doing what you do to make your car (or your body) really last.

If you can't help but live at the top of a 15% grade that goes on for 2 miles one way, then, well, you'll have to wait and see and maybe make a change of car. But for the remaining 99.999% of us, this situation won't occur.

Dear Toyota

I have been a Toyota Lover for more than i can think of. i am a current tourism student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (Port Elizabeth).

if you by any chance donate vehicles or sponsor vehicles, please consider my request.

at the moment i have difficulty with transport, my mother is the only bread-winner, and we are three children studying. my father is now 9 years in a wheelchair, and is in a Home for disabled people. as his eldest son i feel obliged to go visit him on a weekly basis, but the only way i can do that is by means of taxi. nowadays the taxi's are driving wrecklessly, and i cannot stay by my father for the desired time, due to certain times that the taxi's ride their last daily trips.

my request to you is a car or a bakkie, even if its the old models (box shape corolla) or (box shape hilux).
i got my code 10 drivers license last year, and i'll be happy to forward you all my details(full academic record and driver's license).

thank you in advance

i love the 08' though i just caught wind of the 09' and though there are those who think that the prius is nothing but an eyesore, i feel its an iconic symbol of a revolutionary movement. i hope that it gets 70 mpg. i live in the bay area and there are prototypes for a 100mpg prius driving around town. from the looks of it they are 07' models with beta engines. exciting! though as i recolect, its a shame that we arn't all driving ev-1's.

Silicone solar panels? D-oh! That's SILICON (no "E"), nimrod. Silicone is a rubbery elastomer and insulator, also used in breast implants, while silicon is a crystalline solid metalloid, used as a semi-conductor in transistors, integrated circuits, and solar panels.

I purchased a 2005 prius for my business. We were using a full size truck before for most of our job measures and commuting at approx 15mpg. Since we bought the prius we have put about 140,000 miles on it without any mechanical issues, just oil changes and tires. We figure when you add up the fuel savings, tires and maintenance the prius has already more than paid for itself.

If you drive alot of miles why wouldn't you buy a fuel efficient car. It is essentially free after 3 years of use, and you still have an asset with a decent resale value

The author is obviously unfamiliar with thin-film solar, which is thin and pliable. A controller for a panel the size of the roof would weigh no more than a car stereo (remember it's not converting DC-AC, all solar panels are DC which matches nicely with a car's electrical system) No, the panel won't give enough power to propel the car, it will simply keep the batteries topped off. (which is good for the batteries,by the way) Anything which reduces the number of charge/discharge cycles will lengthen battery life. I just wish these new car "tech reports" were written by people who actually were technologically knowledgeable.

If it is plug in, (which i have heard) then the first 100km's or so will be run on the battery, and 80MPG is totaly possible. If you were to simply plug your car in every night (like some do in the winter) then most people could do their daily commute without gas at all!
Has anyone heard of any other plug in's avaliable yet?

Wish I could get more info on the 2009 Prius. My wife's '05 is a great car, good on road trips and comfortable, holds a lot of stuff. My '95 Camry has 188,000 miles on it and I'm nursing it along until the 09 Prius comes out, hopefully with the LiOn extended range battery, whether plugin or not. The web doesn't seem to have any useful news regarding the 09 Prius and it's not on Toyota's website yet. Can anyone point me to anything authoritative? Thanks.

Wish I could share a picture I made last May,07. While northbound in the middle of Iowa I was getting an average of 49 mpg for 293 miles. The graphic on the dashboard showed that the up and down of the expressway showed over 60 and down to 45 mpg at the five minute intervels! Considering I was flying right along it amazed me, I knew it was good but didn't know it would do that for me.

My average is about 50.5 MPG these days. Goes up to 52MPG in summer.

Prius is much larger than Geo Metro and is loaded with features not found on a Metro or any other 14 y.o. car for that matter.
