I have a rotating roof vent that spins it's heart out day and night and it
strikes me this is energy going to waste!

Can someone please suggest a suitable DC permanent magnet motor, eg from
large tape deck, commercial surplus equipment etc. that I can connect to
this vent and get some free electricity?

Will just be part of the big picture and I don't like seeing energy going to
waste.

Even if I get 100 mA out of it, as a hobbyist it is worth doing.

Your best bet might be an old bicycle headlight generator.

Those used soooooooo much torque it would stop the turbine dead, unless
a tornado was in the neighborhood.....

Do the rotating fans on nearby houses also spin their hearts out? If yours
is the only one, then that indicates a different problem (usually
insufficient attic insulation or a broken duct in the attic). If everyone's
does it, then ignore this post :)

Actually, this is not energy going to waste, those rotating roof vents are
driven by the wind and are sucking air out of the attic, working like a pump
to create ventilation. This could all be done with a electrical powered
blower, but it is done with wind power and not wasting energy, it is using
it.
