Hello all.

My wife and I are looking at houses in the city of Portland. One of
the houses has a frame for solar panels. It looks as if there are
spots for 4 solar panels, about 8 ft by 2 ft. The panels are facing
south. While evaluating the house, we would like to take into account
what value we could get out of this. Portland is not a very sunny
city during the winter and spring, but we get sun in the summer and
part of the fall.

Can anyone direct me to some sort of breakdown of the cost of the
solar panels vs. the amount of power generated depending on the
weather and how much money that can save?

Thanks.

Look at a solar map, the Pacific Northwest is probably the worst place in
the US to install solar panels. The other problem is Portland has relatively
inexpensive electric rates. I live in Vancouver, WA and I also have
500watts of PV panels and a hot water panel on my RV that I use in AZ in the
winter.

==================================================
Lets say you get four 200 watt panels.. 800 watts. Lets use $5 a watt
for the panels...$4000 so far. Lets say they get sun 4 hrs a day, so
they will generate about 3.2KWHrs a day. Lets say a KWhr is $.12
cents... the payback rate is $.38 a day... 28 years. If the price of
electricity doubles, payback time will decrease to 14 years. Thats
still a long time....

Actually, it'll probably never pay back if you use the standard idea
of balancing the money spent against an investment that bears
interest.
