Hi all, I just inherited 60w of solar panels, I already own some deep
cycle batterys.
I've ordered some 12V cfl lights to use in the front of the house. 1
on ea side of the garage door and 1 for over the front door.

My question is this , I plan on disconecting the lights from the
switch in the house (all 3 wires) so its totally disconected from the
grid. Can I just hook into the excisting 120v 14/2 wires, or should I
rewire? The lights will be 13W each @ 12V, the total length using the
house wires will be no more than 22 ft. If theres good reason not to
use this wireing I will just do the 2 at the garage door as I can get
at the wires.

13w X 3 =39w X 5 hrs = 195w
60w solar 5hrs per day = 300w

I cant see why not, but you know how the wife can get when one of
these little projects catches fire in the walls...........Thanks
Rob

You won't get 5 hours a day all year round.

You need to find a map for insolation in your area. You're in Canada I see.
Ottawa ?

According to this .....

You might just get your 5 hours or so in July but forget it in winter.

To determine if you have a "switch loop" look in the switch box. How
many wires? What colour wires on the switch? If you only have one pair
of wires in the box and/or the switch has a black AND a white wire
connected, you have a "switch loop" If the switch has 2 black wires,
and 2 white wires are connected with a wire nut, you do NOT have a
"switch loop".
Another test is to connect a test lamp or VOM to each black wire in
any of the fixture boxes and to ground. If power to ANY wire with
switch off, you have a "switch loop".

In Canada it is somewhat unlikely this circuit would be wired with a
"switch loop" but it is not unheard of.
