Please log in for more thread options
If you have any power generation capacity at all, chances are there
are times when your battery bank is too full to accept more solar
power, that the stream is too full, or the wind too strong to harvest
power for your primary system (grid-ties excluded). So, what do you
do with that intermittant bonus power?

Compress air, spin-up a flywheel, make hydrogen, dump heat energy into
the ground.
Why only use one storage media?

Capital expense, silly boy. In the real world, each of those costs real
dollars, which those of us who are not overpaid have to allocate as a
finite resource. If and only if you have a use for compressed air does
compressing air make sense - as a storage medium, it stinks.
Flywheels - ha, ha, ha, very funny - flywheel systems which will store
any useful amount of energy for any reasonable time are priced perfectly
for the folks that can't decide whether to drive the Lamborghini or the
Maserati today, or just let the bodyguard drive the armored Rolls...
