If the alarm is nuisance triggered, then HOW LONG will the alarm
continue to sound if we're not there to shut it off ...

Three minutes. Many state laws set that time limit.

Well many thanks for that info. In this case it's NYS and our '01
Prius, parked near a busy road, triggered the alarm when a loud motor
cycle blasted past. In this case we were on hand to shut it down, but
are concerned about other times, if it might just keep sounding, etc.
Nothing at all in the user & service manuals and Toyota said 1 minute
but not with much conviction. Also there really isn't any practical
place to "test it out" without causing an unacceptable disturbance.
Your comment is comforting, but any further details would be greatly
appreciated (eg - NYS DMV reference). Thanks again in any case ...

You should talk to your dealer where you bought your Prius. I don't have
a Prius yet, but on my current car, a friend's two young boys quickly
learned that they could trigger the alarm on my car fairly easily by
banging on it slightly. I asked the dealer where I bought my car if the
car would be less sensitive and he said it was a minor adjustment.
Either way, my friend's kids are past the age now where they are amused
my triggering my car's alarm system.

As for how long the car's alarm goes off, just take it to a park or
somewhere where the alarm won't bother anyone. Trigger the alarm, and
see for yourself how long it blasts away before it silences.
