I have 18 600ah 2volt AGM cells -- there's no sensible way to parallel
the remaining 12volts into a 24volt series bank, is there, so the
capacity is evenly distributed?

I am guessing these are 2nd hand , why not just sell them on to some one
else who wants a 12v@600ah bank ? , or use them on a separate system on
an out building ? .

They're pretty much new condition, Hawker PowerSafe cells fresh from a

have four of these up and running providing our own home power and
have six for sale (we were going to go 48volt, but decided against
it):

One buyer would like to purchase four, possibly all six, for a remote
location in Africa. His anticipated power consumption is reasonably
moderate, air con, lighting, fridge etc... he wants to go solar,
possibly with a wind turbine, and will have a small generator and a
24volt 2kw inverter.

I think 600ah is the limit as he will have difficulty replacing what
he uses above that capacity with renewables, even figuring on a
maximum 50% DOD.

here's what I've just advised, I will send him a link to this thread
and if anyone has any suggestions or alternative advice about how best
to set these up for solar, please post... I have no experience with
solar, but I assume a 12volt bank for lighting would be fully
sustainable with a modest-sized panel, under the African sun?

How many panels would he need to be sustainable without a generator,
if he is talking 200-300ah from the DC side every day?

my email:

4x6volt for your main DC-AC power.

plus

2x6volt to act  as a backup in case you have a cell failure in your
main 24volt bank.  Remember, you don't need to replace the whole block
if one cell goes bad, as the individual 2v cells are accessible via
their own terminals.

It will be important to keep the spares on a float charge, especially
in Africa as high ambient temperatures dramatically increase the
cell's self-discharge rate and unmaintained batteries will rapidly
degrade.  So, you may as well use these two on a separate 12volt
system -- but something that doesn't need too many amps, such as
florescent lighting in an out-house, a radio, stuff like that which
runs off 12volts DC (inverting 12volts to 240 AC would be a waste of
amps). This way, your solar panels will keep pace with usage and you
can keep your 12volt spares on a permanent float without having to top-
off with a generator.

Such a setup would give you greater flexibility and redundancy. It
would be a bit risky to depend on four blocks as you would have no
spare 2 volt cells.

Alternatively, you could create a second 24 volt bank by combing two
12 volt batteries:

2x6volt 600AH in series =WIRED TO= 6x12volt 105AH in parallel --
giving 24 volts at 600ah (the second bank will be 630ah, but overall
the battery will be limited to 600ah)

The capacities are matched close enough for this to be an option. You
are correct that you don't want to match battery types but they are
the same chemistry and manufacturer and can be wired so that the Ah
ratings are almost equal.

I wouldn't recommend this, because you are creating more work for
yourself having to charge and maintain two large battery banks.

The 12volt 105ah leisure batteries are going to be handy to have, but
you need to keep them on a float charge, or give them a top up every
month (at least) so they stay in good condition.
