I have a generator that is sized for my house.  I have heard of people
installing a capacitor in their AC motor so that the startup does not
load/overload the generator.  Can anyone tell me about this?  My
genset really takes a dive when alot of stuff is on and the AC kicks
in.  Seems to run it fine after the initial start.

Thanks,

perhaps you need to rethink the AC. my trane dual compressor heat pump (a heat
pump is
simply an AC with a reversing valve so that it can either heat or cool) uses
only
1.2kW on the smaller compressor and it's RLA is only 2.2kW, easily handled by a
small
5kW generator

for times of running on the generator, the AC system is automatically locked
into
using only the smaller compressor which is sufficient to maintain RH% at below
55 but
allow temperature to rise up to 80F which is tolerable if outside temperature is
at
90F

Yes.  I have one of these devices on my 5 Ton unit.  It starts and
runs with a 15kw generator.  Prior to having it on my 5 ton, it would
try and try to start it.  Occasionally it would start before I gave up
and shut it off (the AC).  When on normal utility power, lights don't
dim when the AC comes, just a quick flicker, barely noticeable.

I have the KS-1

Easy to install and cheap.  I just ordered another (TO-5) for my 1.5
ton unit the other day.
