So, I have this Onan DJE. I noticed that, in the front of the engine
(where filters are), there seems to be a hole in crankcase that is
closed by a bolt. Maybe 3/8" in diameter or so. I wonder if this hole
can be used to install a remote oil temperature sensor. I can supply
pictures if necessary. Any thoughts?

It isn't the Crankcase that is pressurized by the oil pump.
It is the Oil Journals that are, and that bolt doesn't interface
into the Journal system.  Better to put a Tee in the Oil Pressure
Gauge Line, and call it good.....

Bruce, I am not talking about the oil pressure sensor, which I will do
the way you are suggesting, with the tee, thanks.

In this thread I am talking about the oil TEMPERATURE sensor. That's
what I want to install, an oil temperature gauge. (in addition to the
pressure gauge) I think that a tee would be inappropriate for a
temperature sender, because oil would be stagnant there and would
therefore assume the surrounding temperature. So, I thought, maybe I
could install the oil temp sensor into that hole that I mentioned.

Oil temp sensor needs to be immersed in oil, if the hole is above oil
level it won't work. Odds are the hole is for oil return on a bypass
filter. I'll answer you now :-)  Diesel engines often have two oil
filters. The first filter cleans the oil going to the bearings, the
second finer filter bypasses some of the oil and dumps it back in the
crankcase sans ultra fine particles.

You could put a thermocouple or RTD in through the oil drain plug, pipe
arrangement then it would be in the oil for sure. Less complicated and a bit
less accurate would be to clamp a temperature sensor on the side of the
sump.
