You have many good choices. Good brand names with 1800 RPM diesels
would serve you well (and would cost quite a bit). If you have the $$,
it is the way to go... I am happy with my 26 year old Onan DJE.

What is the smallest, lightest diesel generator available?
Is it a low RPM one?
If one needs to be mobile, a portable generator is important.
Portable as in defined as "can you pick it up?".

Had a 6hp yanmar with a car alternator attached. That was light enough
for two people to manhandle it. Very reliable.

I had heard that the army was developing small portable diesel
generators in the 100-500 watt range. I seem to have misplaced
the reference but these fellows produce generators of the same
scale, up to 300W.

The US army wants only to use a single fuel, and they are converting
everything, from cookstoves to generators to motorcycles over to diesel
fuel.
