As we have heard, if one, by mistake, applies grid power to a running
generator, through a mistaken connection, it leads to destruction of
the generator end due to the generator being out of phase.

While every effort should be made to avoid committing such a mistake,
I would like to know if a properly sized fuse box would prevent this
sort of damage to the generator in case if such a connection occurs.

Use a fuse to sense the short.  A breaker will be too slow. Size the
fuse to the max that you expect to load the generator with.

Cheers

I don't know about how fusing would work in that application.  I've always
set up my house backup generators (in several different homes, now) with a
switch DPDT switch so as to make that kind of connection not possible.

If you are going through the effort to set up an appropriately sized
fusebox, using an appropriately sized transfer switch might not be that
much more complex.  And these can be set up for either certain house
circuits, or even a whole-house switch.
