Awesome. Best of luck to them.

The best counter I've seen to that is pitching the freshness angle, during
the harvest season at least. The maple syrup producers around here (Western
New York) put on a big collective "Maple Fest" for two weekends every spring
where they all have open houses, sales, hayrides, etc. and probably make
most of their money for the whole year. Our cider makers run about the same
deal in the fall.
The organic/chemical free route is another good one, especially with the
re-emergence of Farmers' Markets in many areas. I try to hit roadside stands
in the summer and fall, but then just revert to the grocery store in the
winter.

My understanding it's used for pig feed, for some reason pigs actually get
fatter if the sugar is removed. Also the corn is wet and needs to be dried
before transporting or used up real fast.
