The popular understanding is that Electric Vedhicles are Pollution
free.
It is true that in the location that they are being used, they emit
zero hydrocarbons and hence cause less pollution in the surroundings,

But they need to charge up the Batteries.

The electrical energy that charges up the batteries is produced in a
power station.
If it is Thermal or Nuclear the power station causes enough pollution.
Thus we shift the pollution point from  city to power station ! ( I do
not want to live near one )

To replace the Gas / Petrol in the Auto, we need huge amount of
Electric Power. This will call for huge investment in power stations
and huge supply lines to fuel these power stations. The Oil supply will
diminish over the years and oil prices will be shooting up - whether
one likes or not. Alterantive is coal _ again a diminishing resource,
or nuclear which no body wants near his home !
.
Use more wind power or Hydro power  ?- both are expensive compared with
thermal.

Now what happens to the used Batteries ? Where will all the lead and
Acid go ? Will the Car maker take it back and recycle these ? What
about the plastics used in the batteries ? Will they lie around and
pollute the earth?

98% recyclable. (unless of course they get sent to landfill)

What you say is mostly true, but all these problems are easily solved.
if people would do the right things.

len=People will already  pay you good money for old batteries,to be
recycled and turned into new batteries, This is not a problem, but old
flashlight batteries are returning to the dump.. An old battery should
be turned in, before a new one is sold.

Wind power should solve our energy crisis. there are out of the way
places where the wind is steady most of the time, but nobody is taking
advantage of these places.
---------------------------------------------------
The gulf coast of Texas, from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, 150 miles
cold produce most of America's needs.
---------------------------------------------------
Windmills are ugly but they would not be seen,  if they were located 2
or 3 miles away from the beach,
---------------------------------------------------
Several thousand could be located in this one place. Several thousand
more could also be located inland, where they would be seen only by
rattle snakes, and other varments.located on land stolen from the
American people after the civil war. and now owned by the Japanese.

The extreamly rich that own the land , just don't care.

It all depends on efficiency.

With
Efficient batterie or  efficient fuelcells/storing of hydrogen
Efficient electric/hydrogen production with waste control
Effective distribution

It makes real sense to use electric cars. Fueled either by batteries
or fuelcells.

As long as the total polution goes down or stays the same in short
term. There will be better electric power generators in the future. If
the infastructure is already there. Half the job is done.

Solar is going to be huge in 10-20 years. It will probarbly not remove
all the poluting power, but quite a bit of it. Production of
solarpanels are going up all the time, they are getting cheaper and
more efficient.
The production is up by more than 100% in the last year, and there are
lots of factories in planning or building fazes.
My guess is that in say 10 years time, you will be considered stupid
if you use normal rooftiles instead of solar rooftiles - at least in
sunny areas.

Anyone that knows how they work would never call them "pollution free"

What they do is transfer the pollution to another source.
