Indeed, a question that I have asked many times and so far have never
got a sensible answer, is how much does it cost to make conventional
silicon solar cells.
Not how much do convenional solar cells sell for, which is the answer
I always get.

Mr. Wizard,

A LOT. Just look up the price of relevant sized silcon wafers online to begin
with (use Google ). After which they have to be ultra cleaned, diffused
etched and packaged. All of which are expensive processes. Christ I've worked
in a semiconductor factory !
NOT cheap.
