electricity to displace as much coal generated electricity as
possible.
Not much use for hydrogen in that case.

The cost of electrolyzes is not the problem. If they were free the cost
of hydrogen would be prohibitive. Only if you have a large quantity of
stranded electricity, say a number of large wind machines hundreds of
miles from any load could they be useful. In that case you would use the
hydrogen to produce fertilizer, or some other chemical syntheses.
The entire global warming, and low cost hydrogen problems would be a
moot point if the US built approximately 400 new nuclear power plants,
but to the environmental movement that is a religious issue. No
environmentalist can mention the "N" word for any solution.
