For regen braking and acceleration busts they appear to be feasible. The
original 1997 Prius was to have a supercapacitors but at the last minute
they changed to batteries.

Yep, driven by an IC engine full time and only uses a bit of stored
energy for ower boosts as needed.

Doesn't even come close to News' pipe dream of an "air car".

But then if he could lie about it consstantly we would hve heard
nothing about it all these years.

Dunno if any of you folks are old enough to remember the "Li'l Abner"
comic strip, but there was one character named General Bullmoose who
was the archtypical predatory, big-business tycoon.

A Japanese inventor showed up at General Bullmoose's oil company
office with a self-powered compact car. A strap around the driver's
chest was stretched and relaxed as he breathed, which provided power
to the wheels. The other executives were terrified that demand for
their oil was about to drop to nothing.

General Bullmoose picked up the phone and said "Send up Miss 'Wowie'
Wong from our Asian department." An incredibly curvaceous Asian woman
strutted in at which point the Japanese inventor started panting
uncontrollably. His 'breath powered' car suddenly burned rubber and
went right through the window, crashing to the pavement thirty stories
below.

General Bullmoose sat back, lighted a cigar and said "Another business
problem solved."
