I don't know if it has anything to do with the election, but I predict one
last worldwide oil glut.  (Yes, I know this is not a popular prediction.)  This
prediction is based on both "supply and demand" and market psychology.

1) To the extent that today's price bubble is caused by speculation, those
investors will drop their marbles and flee as soon as the expectation of
continuing energy price increases disappears from the market.

2) Due to the historic prices, oil companies are busting their asses finding
product to sell, which helps the supply side of the equation.  On the demand
side of the equation, to get a feel for what the consumer is doing just drive by
any car lot and see what they are displaying out in front compared to what was
there two years ago.

The Toshiba thing, is very Blue Sky for most folks.  We just have to
deal with what is available.  CF's are the watchword for Lights, and
Wood works for heat for most of the local neighbors. I always fill
the Tanks in the Fall, as if I don't, then I have condensation problems
all winter, when the temps hang around the Triple Point, for weeks at a
time. Energy is the cost of living here, and if your not prepared to
deal with your energy costs, you just can't live here, it is that simple.
I use 75% of the BTU's that I burn, via co-generation, but it still costs
a lot more to live out here than in town.  Maybe you read abut Juneau,
AK's Energy Crisis, this spring?  They lost their HV Line to the Hydro
Project due to avalanche, and had to run the town on Diesel Gensets.
Cost per KWH went from $.11 to $.54 overnight, and it took them about 45
days to repair the Powerlines.  You never heard a bunch of folks complain
so much in your whole life, and then SLASH their energy usage by 45% in
a few days.  Out here in the bush, $.54 is about average for diesel
generated power, and we have been doing it for years. Solar just helps
a bit, but it isn't really cost effective due to the short days in the
winter, and the low sun angle. Wind, where I live isn't very effective,
as I live in a Fjord, and only get either Northern, or Southwestern
winds, and it isn't very consistent. We used to have a Pelton Wheel
Hydro Plant (25Kw) back 30 years ago, but the buried Pipeline that feed
it was Wood Stave Pipe, and the Iron Staves finally rusted out after 50
years, and the new Plastic pipe is on the surface, so it is summer only
operation, and 25Kw doesn't quite make enough, when the Load is 2.5
Megawatts during the summer.  There is talk of getting a Southeastern
Alaska Intertie built, in the next 50 years, but that is just about as
Blue Sky, as the Toshiba thing. Nope, Dead Dinosaur Guts is what makes
the Alaska bush work, and we are learning to deal with it, as is.

| I was told recently by someone who is in the position to have first-hand
| knowledge that high-ups in the energy industry are fed up with the republican
| way and are willing to try something, anything different.  He claims that this
| is a major cause of the current high prices.

The higher prices can have a tendency to make votes shift away from the
"Republican way".  If the energy industry would prefer to see a Republican
in the White House, and Republicans in control in Congress, in 2009 and
beyond, they should "bite the bullet" for now and slash prices as much as
possible, or at least dampen the spikes originaling from export oil prices.
But, they don't do it that way.  It seems they value immediate profits even
more than having a pro-big-business administration in control of government.

When gas prices go up, people do buy less.  They don't reduce purchases as
much as they should, but they do reduce some.  The reduced buying actually
_reduces_ profits ... for the gas station retailers, some of which have
already been shutdown as a result.  But the big oil companies are making
even greater profit in these situations where their costs go up and the
sales volume goes down.  So something is still seriously wrong.  My biggest
suspicion is the impact of futures market speculation on wholesale pricing,
both oil futures as well as gasoline futures (there is such a thing, now,
and it would not surprise me if diesel has a futures market, too).

| I bet one of those little Toshiba nuke plants is looking good right about now
| :-)  Maybe they could fit you up with a 1MW plant that would run your village
| and the packing house.

Use for all those old shipping containers China won't take back.

If someone had asked me if John De Armond, someone I recall from the past as
being a rather intelligent person, would fall down to the level of the likes
of Matthew L. Martin and a number of his cohorts and alter-egos, and start
just making personal attacks when someone says something he doesn't like,
instead of pointing specifically at what he thinks is in error, I would not
have believed them, at least not in the past.

But here it is 2008, and if that had been asked and answered, I'd have been
wrong.

Ever heard of "analysis"?

FYI, this is not source from TV at all.  It's called "life experience".  It
comes from a LOT of sources, many of which have been on the _inside_ of some
of these businesses.
