I picked up a cheap Honda EU1000i generator this weekend. I bought it
with the understanding that it was dead. It does start, but I guess
the guy who bought it before be put two in parallel, but backwards,
and burned this one out on the process. It puts out 12V out of the DC
port, but NO AC at ALL. I guess the inverter is dead. Anyone know if
there's way to fix this thing? I opened up the case and all I found
was a molded, sealed, inverter unit. I guess what I'm asking is if
anyone knows where I can get a used replacement... maybe from someone
with an EU1000 which has a bad motor, or a replacement from Honda (I'm
sure they cost an absolute fortune) or, lastly, an aftermarket
replacement. I haven't checked any other circuits except for the DC
out and the AC out. NO AC out at ALL and DC is present on the DC
jack. Does this sould like a bad inverter.. by inverter, I mean the
final device which connects to the external power jacks.
Thanks for any adice or direction on where to go with this.
SCott.

It is always worth it to go investigate the factory repair job. It
gives you
an idea about the way it ought to be done, and gives you a baseline that
you can count on to compare against other repair estimates. Also check
to see if you can just buy the part from a Honda generator dealer and
replace it yourself.

It is probably a FET transistor that went bad. I'm not sure if they are
"potted" in the control unit (read: burried in silicon goo, tha the unit has
to be replaced as an entire component rather the trouble shooting at board
level.
