Is it just me?  or is this F%$$%CKED?!?  I am so sick of paying through
the nose to fill my tank.  Then I read this article in the NYTimes
about the electric car and how it was basically killed by the auto and
gas companies.  A clean car?  That you can plug in at home?  Why were
these perfectly good brand new cars SHREDDED by GM?
I think we should get this car back on the road.  Ethanol doesn't seem
to be the answer sadly.
The article mentioned this documentary Who Killed the Electric Car?
which seems to be an answer to Gore's film that frankly depressed the
s**t out of me.
www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com  watch the trailer- or don't- it might
piss you off.

The catch is, if you run your electric car on retail electricity, the
cost per mile is the same as the gas car. The electric company is
generating electricity for 3 cents a KWH, selling it to their big users
for 4 cents a KWH, and selling retail to us peons at 15 cents a KWH. So
if you could generate your own electricity cheaper than 15 cents a KWH,
you could squeak a little savings. Does anyone know why they charge
500% more for the same stuff? Other than 'because they can'?? Its not
'saving on the packaging material' I don't think.

Another problem is energy density and range. Electrics are fine for
urban transport, but not good for transcontinental or long distance
driving, and unless you have "green" power source, you are only
displacing the polution. I, unlike most on this group, have built,
owned, and driven electric, so I know of what I speak.

My electric, a 4 passenger sport coupe, had a maximum urban range of
50 miles, and a maximum highway range of 30 miles. It was about 600
lbs heavier than it's gasoline counterpart and had excellent
performance.

I'm wondering what the impact of using AC, heat and other accessories
might be with an electric or battery car.
Any ideas about that?

IIRC the GE car had a heat-pump heater/AC unit.  I don't _think_ the
other accessories would be very significant in terms of milage
reduction.
