Hi,
I just acquired an older home in the Mojave desert. It needs window
treatments of some sort (the old bed sheets nailed to the walls aren't
cutting it). I am looking for recommendations on energy friendly
shades that will reduce solar heat gain during the day in the summer
and conductive/radiative heat loss in the winter. Something with some
good engineering data behind it is desireable.
Thanks,
Ivan

You can get stick-on plastic film the allegedly reflects 60% of solar
radiation. some sort of molecular metal film I think.
You can also get vertical blinds with a shiny reflective aluminium
foil to reflect radiation.
There's one here for example.
