I want to burn wood in the fireplace this winter. Soapstone is too
expensive. Any suggestion on efficient fireplace inserts ?

The most efficient would be a small free-standing stove sitting out in front
of the fireplace with a stovepipe plumbed into the fireplace chimney.

And unless you're cutting your own wood, it would probably be
a pellet stove instead of a wood stove.

I've got a source for wood. My friend said that i need to go undersized
fireplace insert , along with improving my house energy efficiency. My
house is 1720 sq. ft. , most fireplace insert seem to be in 1500 sq. ft.
range.

Don't forget to let the wood dry (under cover) for at least 6 months, a year is
probably better if not previously cut or you'll end up with one very tarry
chimney
and a high risk of a chimney fire.
Always burn DRY wood.
