Gas generator will run smoothly only with 1/2 choke??
It ran fine last year with the choke open all the way.
Now, it will surge and buck and shut down with the choke completely
open.
Obviously it is running too lean this way.
Any problem running it in the partial choke position?
What is the real fix and is it worth it?

Clean the gunk out of the carburetor. Yes.

As someone already noted, the FIX is to clean out the carb. You may need a
gasket kit and/or other parts.
More importantly, the PREVENTION is to get all of the gas out of your
generator before you store it. At minimum, start the generator, turn off the
gas, and let the engine run until it stops. Better yet, run the tank and the
carburator dry, and then find a way to get the last few drops of fuel out of the
carb (some generators have a valve for this).
If you read the manual that comes with your generator, it probably has
detailed storage instructions. Follow them.

Isn't the fuel likely to have been contaminated by water after standing so long
? It
can contaminate fuel due to condensation on the fuel tank walls of airborne water
vapour. There's a reason private pilots have a special widget to check their
tanks
for this (fuel tester).
