Does anybody have any experience in what it would take to marry a
relatively undersized generator, say a 10KW, with sufficient battery
storage, so it could start an a/c that required a "surge" of 20KW to
start?

It's going to be much less expensive to either upgrade the generator
or downgrade the A/C unit, inverters tend to cost on the order of a
buck a watt...
Dunno if you could have a synchronous motor with a flywheel (and a
soft-start to get it running) that could pick up the slack, but it
sounds like an implementation nightmare.

What kind of AC requires 20k startup, not a house. You need a bigger
generator.

One of my three A/C units, theoretically the smallest one, that just
runs my family room, has a peak starting surge of 70A@240V, or
something like 17KW.

Or a more efficient A/C.

Hi,
It might be better to upgrade to an 'inverter' AC, these have a MUCH
lower starting current and are much more efficient, so you would save
on energy bills as well as the cost of a large generator and inverter.
cheers,
Pete.
