Great if you want a project to fiddle with. Less great if you want a
reliable, trouble-free generator. Also illegal due to emissions in some
locales. Calling on my personal research, there's importing from india,
getting the casting sand out of the motor (hmm, quality, I think not),
taking the heads off every 1000 hours to scrape the carbon, fabricating
valve springs when the originals break, etc...
The folks that love these love tinkering with them. That's not quite the
same thing as having a drop-dead reliable generator that only needs oil
and filter changes for a long, long time to be happy.
One of the early adopters has a listeroid in his airplane hanger in
Florida and did a fairly detailed web page. I lost count of how many
breakdowns he had merely getting to 250 hours. Not exactly reliable, and
the OP seeks reliable.

Yes it would be something to tinker with but I think it would be worth it
IMHO. Also I am sick of hearing that they want to ban them because of
emissions reasons. Anyone with half a clue knows that listers aren't exactly
common engines to have so the emissions from the ones that are around just
don't amount to much. BTW yes I just said that I don't care about the
emissions and yes I still want an NHW20 Prius (I don't like the 2010 model).
Would the Floridian you mention happen to have a poorly designed website
called f1rocketboy?

This topic was started by a "hit & run" poster, but since the request was
for a generator that will "last longer than 1 year" I am willing to assume
that he/she is not mechanically inclined, so any Listeroid-powered solution
would probably be a bad match.
Further, since that same poster mentioned something about a bad heart, a
construction project of that scope would likely be a non-starter.

Thanks for all the input for the generators, I wanted to find out
about a small generator and I got information about generators
that could power a whole household..
I"I'm still looking

small = Cheap = Operating hours equals less than 1000 Hours = JUNK.....
Buy a Honda Inverter Unit.... Small, Not cheap, Reliable, and Good
History....
