For all of you who use Alkaline Batteries in your Clocks, Camera,
Flashlights, and TV clickers, the IKEA superstore sells a 10 pack of
Alkalines for $1.95... this makes the individual battery cost about 20¢
each....

Much to expensive.
Rechargeable NiMh store more power, can be recharged
several hundred times and are so much cheaper

Alkaline batteries are a much better choice for many applications as they do
not exhibit self discharge as NiMh batteries do. I sometimes find them on
sale for free (with rebate) at Menards.

I know about NiMh batteries, and their special charger.... Costco sells a
collection of AAA and AA NiMh's plus the special charger for $20.....
but.... Alkaline's can be recharged too, with a special Alkaline Battery
charger.... the Alkaline's sold at IKEA averaged only 20¢ each in cost....
which seems to be a good buy.....

I disagree with Roland that NiMH store more power than alkaline. They store
about 1/3 the power of alkaline.
Having said that, NiMH are very inexpensive and do not need a special
charger. The charge regime is the same as NiCD, and any NiCd or NiMH charger
works fine. 15 hour charger are best, 30 minute chargers are worst.
For high drain purposes, you can't beat the $20 deal at Wal-Mart. You get 8
AA size 1800Mah NiMH and a 4 cell charger. This could pay for itself really
quick if you have a digital camera, portable 2-way radios, or other high
drain devices.
Don't use NiMH for clocks or the TV remote. Alkalines rule for low-drain
applications.
