There seems to be lots of thoughts on high tech solutions to provide
energy for the home.
However 90% of the solution is saving energy. As well as doing the
usual solar things in my home I have massive insulation.
Consequently,   I don't need a central heating system. The sun,
refrigerator, freezer, lights and TV keep my house warm  except in
prolonged cold and cloudy spells.
Insulation needs no maintainence & has no running costs.

It takes the profit out. My energy cost is $30 a month year round
because of insulation, conservation and solar hot water (etc). I have
a machine shop and the electronic and mechanical skills to design and
build all sorts of equipment, but every energy-saving idea I've had
has been too simple to make money on. Most require a little too much
care or attention from the user, like watching indoor and outdoor
humidity or being careful not to rip the plastic film on the window
inserts. I don't think I've even convinced anyone to replace a shower
head with a sink spray hose, which shuts off when you let go.

Mine has a thumb-controlled shut off.  When my kids go somewhere else and
take a shower they are aghast that the water just runs all the time.
