Last week I set up the Kill-a-watt to measure all the electric I use in a
week, for the PC.  The PC is turned on 2x per day.  Usually for 45 minutes
in the morning and up to 4-5 hours in the evening.  I turn off the monitor
switch when the PC is turned off.  The priniter is used occassionally and
switched on only when needed.  There are a few powered USB items, like a
cradle for my Pocket PC and a business card scanner (both left on).  The
same outlet strip also powers my cable modem and Wireless gateway/hub.

The PC is on more frequently on the weekend.

For the week, the total usage was 11.8 kWH for an annual usage of 615 kwH,
or at a rate of $0.10 / kwH about $61.50 per year.

Mark

PS - has anyone else measured the cost of the PC, internet, etc and if so
what are your numbers?

Kinda' funny that the energy to run your PC is almost twice my 5
megabit ISP  costs. Who would have thought it?

I haven't measured my PC energy usage but only the power to run. I
forget the figures and my Spreadsheet locked up a while back but the
loder PC with a CRT was about 125 watts, full on, and the newer unit
with the LCD screen, about 117 watts IIRC.

Just wanna note that a typical PC PSU(300 watt) uses ~6 watt when turned off by
the on/off switch on the computer.

That means you can charge a USB device like the mp3 player ZEN V,
even if the computer is off, and if you dont have anything to charge,
the best thing is to turn off the mains.

I bougth a rail width a on/off swith and 6 mains plugs, so when i turn off my
computer
i switch off the mains to the computer and the 4 transformers, 1 for the
speakers,
and 2 for extrenal hard drives and 1 for the router.

a side note.
A running 300 watt PC psu uses about 12 watt, with nothing connectet,
and jump startet with a connection from the green wire to black(0v).

I have yet to get a good reading over a long period, as
the kill a watt resets itself, even on the most unnoticed
power glitches.
