HURRICANE GUSTAV WEAKENS TO CATEGORY 2

New Orleans was spared the full force of Hurricane Gustav, which
weakened to a category two hurricane before making landfall.

However, Mayor Nagin said the city resembled a "ghost town" after the
biggest evacuation in US history left only 10,000 residents.

Police and the National Guard were being deployed safely off the
city's streets.

Louisiana's coastal areas were pounded by torrential rain and
hurricane force winds. Weather forecasters told Daily Planet Media an
"extremely dangerous" surge of up to 4.2 meters could be expected.

Oil production in the US oil and gas region offshore was shut down
after Gustav barreled through Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica
killing 80 people.

Baton Rouge and other inland areas have been warned to be on the look
out for storm-spawned tornados.
