The Tees Valley's status as a UK centre for the development of new,
cleaner energy technologies received a major boost with the
announcement that Centrica plc has acquired an option to participate in
what would be the UK's first complete clean coal power generation
project. The firm has paid £7.15 million for an 85 per cent interest
in development company Coastal Energy Limited, which will now seek full
consents for the right to construct a new clean coal power station on
Teesside.

Dr Dermot Roddy, the Chief Executive of Renew Tees Valley, said;

"This is the biggest and most important development since we were
established three and a half years ago. Built at a cost of around one
billion pounds the new power station will provide us with a carbon-free
source of hydrogen at low cost, and will go towards meeting our
hydrogen economy ambitions."

As fossil fuels run out and we seek to replace them, hydrogen is the
obvious answer because it is the single most common element in the
universe and is the preferred fuel for the highly efficient devices
called fuel cells.

This shift is the move towards the 'hydrogen economy' and this
planned new power station will create vast quantities of hydrogen as
part of its processes. The Tees Valley is well placed to take advantage
of the move towards the 'hydrogen economy' as it is already home to
the largest hydrogen system in the UK.

Dr Roddy added; "To use coal to generate electricity and hydrogen
without impacting on climate change is a world first. It also fits in
with the pioneering work we are carrying out with the Chinese to help
them develop their clean coal technology linked to enhanced oil
recovery."

The new plant will take two years to design before construction work
starts creating 300-500 new jobs. When operational some 30-50 workers
will be needed to cover three shifts.

You're as nuts as he is.  There's no word of a lie there - it's just highly
debatable that there's any value to the concept.

is about as big a lie as they come. Not quite on a par with Black is White but
close.
