Clearly you've never driven one.

I had two. Never again.

Ancient history.
The new ones are as much of an advancement over 15 years ago as
today's gas engines are over the model "T" Ford.
I still don't like 'em because the fuel stinks, but I'm not saying I
wouldn't buy one if I was putting on enough miles to make it really
worth while.

A automotive engineer neighbour of mine designed the injection systems of
the Renault range of diesel engines. He said they are more complex than
petrol and still dirtier. He wouldn't touch one. Filth, yes filth. OK for
tractors. They blacken building and people's lungs. The only reason why
they sell in number in Continental Europe is the tax break on diesel fuel.
It is cheaper to buy.
