Have about 10 of them, laying around at the warehouse. I'm wondering if
someone was successful in making a UPS (or its inner circuitry to that
matter) some sort of light-duty inverter when hooked up to a solar panel.
Don't have a 7.2V panel to try, so maybe someone can share their
experience.

I have used a CHEAP (Upsonic 350) UPS as an inverter for a couple of
years, just in my van to allow running the laptop, charging up the
Camcoeder, running soldering iron, etc.
It worked better as an inverter than it did as a UPS, but for an old
UPSonic, that's not saying a lot. The Upsonic, by the way, uses a 12
volt battery.
I cought a low cost inverter and threw away yhe old UPS this spring.

I guess, I will give one of them a try. I have supposedly good quality APC
units, 200 to 250 VAs, they use 7.2V batteries. Batteries seem to die first,
so it looks like the unit themselves are still fine. I don't really see any
drawback of running them continuously at about 25% load to prevent
overheating as they originally were designed to run for only 20 minutes or
less as inverters. If I seem to be missing something important, any
suggestion posted here will be greatly appreciated.
