I used to work for Imperial Oil in the late 1980's/early 1990's and had
friends who worked at some of the oil refineries in Alberta, Canada.
Automobile gasoline does have a "shelf life" of approximately 6 or 8 months
assuming that it is stored in a tight container.  After that the petroleum
starts to degrade but it takes several months for it to become junk.  I
believe that the fumes (benzenes and all the other highly
carcinogenic-in-any-amount chemicals) evaporate leaving behind a base
product that doesn't burn too well in a combustion engine.

When the tanker arrives to fill the underground tanks at the gas station,
depending on which grade of gasoline it is, they put the additives into it
first before filling the u/g tanks.  It's usually about 4 litres of the
"stuff" (sorry I can't remember what it is) for every 10,000 litres or so.

As for the "stabilizer" the gas cap adds on some Craftsman and Troy built
mowers, I firmly believe that's a marketing ploy.  It probably works but gas
doesn't go bad in 30 days as they claim.  Mind you, the cap on the fuel
tanks on mowers usually has little holes in it.. perhaps it lets more in and
out causing the fuel inside to spoil.... (?).  Fuel tanks in vehicles are
better sealed I would think.
