So the previous guy cut the neutral after the diode died? That was just
a confusion factor?

I guess that wasn't very clear.  I replaced the generator head on a
generator that had a shorted field coil.  I was re-using the existing (old)
receptacles and circuit breakers because the new head did not come with
them.  I was only getting voltage on 2 out of 3 (duplex 120 and single 240V)
outlets and this turned out to be because neutral had been cut on the 120
duplex receptacle on the old generator head.  The shorted diode seems to
have nothing to do with it.  The only thing I can possibly attribute it to
is a plastic clip that holds the doide in position was broken so there may
have been some damage to the diode which caused it to short out.  The diode
looked OK though.  Neutral on the 120 V duplex is now restored and I have
power to all my receptacles :-D
