Verizon is droping all but the big eight and it's own internal 0.verizon
hierarchies.
FWIW: Verizon probably wishes that that it could just unplug it's
news servers and be done with it. But dispite the fact that they
are the bastard son of Verizon, there is an individual within Verizon
who has made a good effort of running the servers. He can't do
everything he wants, but he does manage.
Verizon is not going to block access to external news servers.
so us usenet junkies on Verizon will simply go to AIOE, Tera, Giga,
or some other free server for our alt fix.

How do you feel about 'transferring' the really good content alt groups into
the big 8 heirarchy ?
e.g. as sci or rec groups typically

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Alt isn't going anywhere, a few more ISP's who wanted to dump USENet
are dumping part or all of it. Frankly, it's good for our customer
base.

It could be done. But, This is only a couple of big US ISP's.
So what percent of the Usenet population as a whole is affected
by this action? Sure it's a huge impact to those of us who
use those ISP's. But not to the rest of the world. So the
alt groups will continue to live on, on other servers.
Pointless to move the discussions to another group just because
of a disadvantaged few. The real solution is for them to
find another server. There are plenty. Oh look! I'm using
one now.

I think I can quantify the size of the problem ...
Verizon seems to do all their Usenet stuff through gnilink.net.
Looking at articles posted to alt.* (but not alt.binaries.*) for the
month of June so far, it looks like about 1.3% of them originated at
gnilink.net.
I think alt.* will survive.
Here's the list I have of the top injection points for these alt.*
(but not alt.binaries.* -- that's excluded) posts for June so far --
15.7% postnews*.readnews.com
13.5% news.giganews.com
9.2% postnews.google.com
5.2% *.usenetserver.com
5.1% sp*iad.superfeed.net
5.0% newsp.newsguy.com
3.2% newshosting.com
2.5% fe*.news.easynews.com
2.4% news.neostrada.pl
2.2% news.teranews.com
1.9% news.usenetfast.com
1.8% news.burningnewz.com
1.7% news.ufonewz.com
1.6% individual.net
1.6% news.comcast.com
1.4% news.usenethost.com
1.4% news.bt.com
1.3% gnilink.net
1.2% news.lightningnews.com
1.1% nlpi*.nbdc.sbc.com
1.1% roadrunner.com
1.0% news.earthlink.com
0.9% news.chello.at
0.9% news.usenetprovider.com
0.8% news.highwinds-media.com
The usual cavaets apply, with the main ones probably being that this
looks at articles posted rather than articles read, and often one NSP
operates under several different names, and that this data comes from
articles seen at roadrunner.com (which is run by newshosting.com) so
spam will be under-reported if filtered out.
