I  have a rotating roof vent that spins it's heart out day and night and it
strikes me this is energy going to waste!

Can someone please suggest a suitable DC permanent magnet motor, eg from
large tape deck, commercial surplus equipment etc. that I can connect to
this vent and get some free electricity?

Will just be part of the big picture and I don't like seeing energy going to
waste.

Even if I get 100 mA out of it, as a hobbyist it is worth doing.

Yep, that would stop it from turning and making noise.

Stepper motors make pretty good generators. Each coil will drive a fw
rectifier. Rects feed a cap. I wanted to rig one of these up on my
Harbor Freight windmill. Might be able to run some decorative leds or
something.

You could count the half wave cycles from the stepper and rectifiers
using a microcontroller. Make an anemometer. I assume a roof turbine
spins at 1/3rd the windspeed like a cup anemometer?
