Hi - In the not too distant past I saw an article (perhaps in Smart
Homeowner??) about a simple device (I believe it was an LCD based
meter) which displayed current electrical use. The theory being that if
you have a constantly displaying meter strategically located in your
home that your conciousness of energy use will be continuously raised
thereby enabling you to reduce your overall consumption.
I failed to save the article, is anyone familiar with such a device
and/or do you know where we could purchase it??
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Eric

Ammeter, 100A or 200A. Common on industrial plant. You cant wire a
killawatt meter into your mains supply.

A whole house meter would probably be what you are looking for, but
for it to make an impression, it should be able to be read in various
formats. If there is a boy in the house, it would be most effective
if it measured - "Chances that you are NOT going to get the car this
weekend." For a girl it might read "You are THIS grounded." For a
wife, "The lower the number, the better your chance for a dinner out."
For a guy, "Lower numbers equal more cool tools."

If you're going to go for a negative reinforcement approach why not try a few
turns of wire around
one of the power cables, connected to an amplifier and speaker.
The more energy one's using, the more irritating the noise.
It could be of use in a collective punishment approach too. :-)
Cheers,
