My daughter has a 5 watt christmas bulb in her ceiling fan--she uses it when
she doesn't really need the 13 watt CFL.

And where does the power for that come from ? Out of thin air ?
I like working in relatively high ambient light, it's better for your
eyesight.

No, from the 5v USB connection on your laptop/computer. "Draws less than
90 seconds of battery power per hour of use" They claim.
If you are running low power and need a little flexible keyboard/desk
light its much more efficient to use the USB running a 5v LED than
plugging in a CFL or other bulb. And if you are on batteries alone
w/zero power it draws you down about 90 seconds/hour (they say -- having
used it I didn't notice that much difference when running of batteries in
terms of run time).
