Hi.  I have a POS Homelite generator with a fried field coil.  I'm trying to
find a new (or used) head (5000 watts) that will fit right onto the tapered
shaft of the Tecumseh 10 HP HM100 engine.  It seems that all I can find are
generator heads with keyed shafts for pulley belts.  I also have a Chicago
Electric (Harbor Fright) generator with a Honda GX engine and a Pramac 5000
watt generator head.  The Pramac works just fine for my purposes and would
probably fit right onto the Tecumseh engine.  Anyone know where to get one
for a tapered shaft?  I would think there would be a market for replacement
generator heads.

BTW John Deere wants over $300 (including shipping) for a new field coil.
They also wouldn't fix it under warranty (had engine problems too).  Just
thought I'd say that in case anyone is considering buying anything that says
Deere or Homelite on it.  I never will again.

Thanks.

If I were you, I would abandon this unit and maybe sell what you have,
for whatever you can get, on ebay.

I might win a head for a 10 kW onan DJC, 1-3 phase reconnectable,
perhaps you or someone else may be interested.

I agree for the most part.  I'm just trying to see if I can get it running
again without spending too much money.  I would feel more secure having a
backup generator for my other generator.

10kW is more than I have a need for right now...

How much is your time worth? Connecting a head to an incompatible
engine can be expensive -- you probably need to weld some frame, that
would be my guess, and time consuming.

As long as the mounting bolt pattern and shaft length is the same it should
fit right on there.  I stuck a Coleman 1850 watt head on the Tecumseh 10 HP
and just needed to add spacers.  Not very effecient of course.

I found a Honda engine to replace the BS motor that came on the Coleman 1850
and it looks like it should go right together.  I guess the bottom line here
is that I wasted money buying cheap generators and now I'm trying to fix
them as backup units and meanwhile trying to make something a little better
(I hope) than what they were originally.  Of course I have to consider if
I'm just throwing good money after bad.  I just can't stand having stuff
that I can't fix.  Maybe if we call it a hobby it will be justified ;-)
