I have noticed the govt. has turbine powered generators putting out 28v d.c.
They look big by their picture and I think they are used for aircraft. Has
anyone used them? I am curious about how they start, HP rating, noise, power
output, fuel eff. and fuel type. Being DC output should make them good
battery chargers.

I used these things when I was in the USAF and I would estimate they put out
about 100KW. They put out 115vac at 400 cycles and 28vdc at about 150 amps
if I remember correctly. They start electrically from internal 28 volt
battery bank and make a real cool whooping sound when they start up. We
called them whoppers. I always got a real kick out of starting them up. The
tach would spin up to 38,000 RPM before the fuel was dumped in. I suspect
they have a 100 gallon fuel tank and use JP4 jet fuel. If I remember
correctly they burned through the fuel pretty fast.
