Where can I find a cheap 1-2 kVA 120-240-277 V transformer?
I have a variac, but using it backwards seems a little dangerous.

Yes you will burn out the variac. www.jamco.com has some 1-2kva variacs with
120input 220 outputs, will set you back $200
Maybe a used Powerstat can be found? Have you searched for 'Auto Transformer' ?
Cheers

I was looking for 4-5kva, and just kept watching ebay until some showed
up. I paid about $75 shipped. Now if you have some additional criteria
(such as size, duty cycle, efficiency, etc) then you are in for a long
wait and/or must prepare to pay a much higher price.
