Transmissions run backwards have other problems,
as I understand.

V-belts absorb energy, There is a lot of drag on them.
Chains are more efficient.
Then there is the VWAT that uses a fly wheel to provide more torque.
The idea was that the turbine was used to spin up the flywheel. When
it reached a predetermined speed the alt/ gen would be energized thus
producing electricity until the flywheel fell below another preset
speed and shut off the alt/ gen to allow the flywheel to spin up to
speed again. If I remember it right the clutch was a aircon pulley
that could be switched on and off.
