What happened to vertical shaft wind generators? Seemed a good idea as they
didn't need to face into the wind.

I've been looking for around a bit lately myself. The only two vertical axis
turbines I've noticed are the Ampair Dolphin (way low power) and stuff from
Ropatec, which is quite big but able to generate @ full output no matter how
strong the wind. They are fairly heavy and inefficient, but *I* think they are
kewl <grin>.

Way too expensive!

Agreed, but also very neat design. I'd love to have one or two of the lower
capacity units hanging off my balcony. Thanks for the link.

They are less efficient and therefore more costly than horizontal
axis turbines. Facing into the wind isn't a big deal.
