With respect to the mid-atlantic electricity prices,
wind power can be cheaper than coal power electricity!

Rather strange, but the side benefits being ecologically friendly
and having a lower carbon footprint is that one can save money too!

Well, like any economic news the situation may change but
here's the details as of May 2009..

In parts of Maryland and DC a home/residential user
can purchase electricitythat is 100% wind powered from

clean currents (see http://www.cleancurrents.com )
see their pricing schedule =
http://www.cleancurrents.com/index.php/C-Green-Overview

at
11.5 cents per Kwh for a  1yr contract
(it takes 2- 3 weeks to process btw)
also
if one lives in Montgomery County there
is a .5 cent/kwh discount for the first 20,000kwh purchased.
which drives the cost down even further to
11.0 cents perk kwh

Next month, June,  the cost of standard (coal powered)
electricity from PEPCO increase from
11.4 cents per kwh (from Oct 1 08 to May 31 09)  to
12.7 cents per kwh  (from Jun 1 09 to Sep 30 09) and then drop back
down to
11.6 cents per kwh  (from Oct 1 09 to May 1 10)

for details see
http://www.pepco.com/home/
http://www.pepco.com/_res/documents/md_schedule_r.pdf

I've signed up for wind power for 1 year (Jun 1 09 to Jun 1 10)
- so for the next 11 months my electricity generation
rate from wind power will be lower than the standard
(coal/diesel powered) rate from my electric company, PEPCO.

Since I don't use much electricity ( I average about 435 kwh/month)
my savings are not that much - so switching to windpower thus
is more of a symbolic gesture. or tipping of the hat to
the effort to develope alternative forms of energy.
