It's probably more than that. When we finished commissioning Browns Ferry #3,
GE gave all the staff little cardboard placards. Each contained a genuine,
slightly radioactive fuel pellet under plastic along with text noting that the
pellet was the energy-equivalent to 4 train cars of coal. It, of course, had
the graphic of 4 coal cars in the background.
That was at the relatively low burn-up rate of the early 70s. Most plants
have converted to high burn-up fuel now so that pellet is worth even more. I
don't feel like doing the math today but suffice it to say that there is a
huge amount of energy in each fuel pellet.
