So I own a motorcycle and drive it to work on nice days, saving fuel
and money right?   Wrong.  It gets 75 MPG so i do save fuel, but by
law I have to register it and pay for insurance for 2 vehicles so it
costs me money in the net.

I would guess the same is true for anyone having a second small
electric car for local use and a larger gas car for long distance.  I
think this is one aspect of the problem we CAN look to lawyers and
politicians to fix.

Maybe you just need a new state.  A car tag in TN costs a flat $4 a year plus
sales tax the first year only.  No other taxes apply other than in a few
corrupt counties that have tacked on wheel taxes.  Still low.  They average
around $0/year and the highest is $4/year.  Liability-only insurance for an
additional vehicle (over-50 driver with a perfect record) adds about $75 a
year to my bill.

So yeah, my electric vehicles save me a LOT.  The low taxes let me own several
specialty vehicles, one for each major use.  I have a GMC medium duty
commercial truck with 22 ft box on the back and a lift gate that I use as my
pickup truck.  Nice having a secure, dry and locking box long enough to hold
20 ft sticks of material.  There's the motorhome for traveling and camping.
The Caprice for longer trips, the EV for short to moderate trips and the
E-scooter for really short trips.

Some aspects of the system still need fixing.  It's kinda outrageous that a
single guy like me who never loans out a vehicle still has to pay liability
insurance on each separate vehicle.  After all, I can only drive one vehicle
at a time.  This is part of that old "best laws that insurance company money
can buy" problem.

I so totally agree with this.

Furthermore over here the 'no claims discount' you get when you're accident free
for some years has to be earned from zero on a second policy too (some companies
will give you some credit but not the full amount you 'earned' on your first

Do they seriously think you're instantly a worse driver in your second car ?

The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments in a Courthouse
is that you cannot post “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” “Thou Shalt Not Commit
Adultery” and “Thou Shalt Not Lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges
and politicians! It creates a hostile work environment.
