I have just done something really daft , I left a nicd tool batt on
charge for far to long (no auto shut off on charger) , court it just
after the burst but before the a fire started (nasty black smoke) . I
have left what is left of the pack/charger out side to cool and will bag
remains for trip to waste tip (yes they have a container for nicd), is
there any thing elce I should do ?

Well mate, buying one with an auto-shutoff comes to mind.....
I have the most lovely little NiMH charger, keep it right next to me
bed, and yank the cells out soon as the light goes out.

Oh bullshit, Dave. If that were true then anyone who handled cad plated nuts and
bolts would be pushing up daises. Cadmium is barely moderately toxic. An LD50
dose
for rats at 225 mg/kg puts Cd in the mildly toxic range (numbers vary by
reporter but
it appears that rats are about 4X more sensitive to Cd than humans). Dealing
with a
burst battery doesn't involve any risk of chronic exposure so that doesn't need
to be
considered.
Just sweep the thing into the garbage, wipe away the residue with a damp paper
towel
and forget about it.

hi john , when you state "An LD50 dose for rats at 225 mg/kg" I assume
that means that at that dose 50% of the rats dropped dead .
I am feeling not quite so worried , samuel c.

Lots of things are toxic. Try drinking 3 gallons of water really fast.
That will kill you much more easily. John is right.
