Is it possible to rewire a heater to make it run on 230V without using a fat
transformer?
I want to make a kotatsu table (a table with a heated element underneath).
If enough of your body is warm you don't need to have the remainder of the
room so warm (after all, the room itslf is happy at any temperature).

With a 220 dimmer?  Wait a minute!  Just a diode (with proper voltage and
current ratings) would do the job.  Within limits, a resistance heater only
cares about average power and ignores the peaks.

I'm confused. Japan is 100 volts, right?

How about a $20 1500 W 120 V space heater with a thermostat under a table?
