" Most breakers are designed to ignore surge, ....
. I use the Nema L14-30r twistlock, ...."

That's the piece of data that I've been missing.

I think I will recommend that we use the 30 amp circuits in the 240
recepticle to avoid chronic overload as much as possible.

----------

I have to agree that "something" seems suspicious.
My collegues have blamed a "cheapening" of Honda parts since the mid
90s.
And have quoted 4000watt nominal loads to me.

However, I'm concerned that we have had "creeping" load increases over
the years.
Or perhaps  we may have added some base load and then other loads such
as motor start cause shutdown.
It may be that we have 4000watts nominal now but only had 3000 back in
the mid 90s - I don't have data going back then...

Motors comprise the bulk of our load...

I'm hoping that the 25% increase in continuous capacity of the Generac
over the Honda will help.

I am also curious about any types of recording meters.

It may be time for us to invest in some devices that sample multiple
times per cycle and can record the data for offload to a PC.
Any suggestions?

thanks
Phil

At least do your own audit , motors wear and go bad this can lead them
to draw much more on startup or even running. A good clamp on digital
amp meter that records peak surge is a good start. Test everything
powered yourself, who knows what you have in consumption, even a short
will increase load dramaticly. Im sure there is power recording but I
have not used it, it should be simple enough an amp meter that logs to
the computer.

I cant find my honda brochure but from what I remember if you were to
have followed it you would find that 4000w of motor loads is not safe if
you went by Hondas recomendations for your unit, its to much surge load,
and personaly a bit much for longevity of the unit.

I have a 240 volt twist lock output on my gas generator that splits to 4
120vac outlets. I put the well pump on one, the washing machine on the
second, the propane dryer and battery bank charger on the third, and the
rest of the house (no big electrical loads) on the fourth.

On my diesel gen that is 3 phase 240ac, I split pump-battery
charger/washer-dryer/house on the 3 140vac outputs.
