I've done similar operations on alarm clocks; it's quite effective.

Many thanks for the helpful responses.
I am reluctant to take the cover off in case i mess the circuits up but
i guess i`m going to have to do it.
I would have thought the makers would have incorporated a simple switch.
At the moment if stored power gets to low i have to throw a transfer
switch on to mains then go to the shed(my power station)right at the end
of the garden so as to stop the screeching.I have a remote switch but
that only
kills it all if the power is up enough.
