I'm really losing much heat down the drain, I've got over 40' of cast
iron drainpipe acting as a radiator ;~). It's probably what helping keep
my basement warm as it is ;~). That GFX is awfully expensive for what it
is, I could build two solar water heater panels for the cost of the GFX

My non-professional understanding from mainly Google is that the
temperature range for growth is from around body temp to 115F,
somewhat wider for survival. Sterilization requires at least 145F.
These numbers vary among sources.

Copper and silver inhibit bacteria and algae, plastic supports them. I
didn't see anything about cast iron or stainless steel. Chlorine in
the water helps but some bacteria like cryptosporidium(sp?) are
relatively tolerant of it.

The problem surfaced in Canada and cruise ships and AFAIK not in US
municipal water systems. My mother survived Legionnaire's that she
caught on a cruise ship.

I don't know many people keeping their hot water tanks at 145F,
I've had mine set at 135 for the last 20 years. From what I've read it's
not as much an issue with bottom burner gas heaters because the water
temp at the bottom of the tank gets higher than 150 as the heater runs.

We have a natural gas heater, most of our hot water usage is during the
morning, showers x three people, then off to work. During the day hot
water usage would be minimal, the preheater tank would have eight hours
to heat back up.

To what temperature?  34.005 F? Water is thermally massive.

Neglecting convection, aren't we looking at 6.3 years between showers?
That is a non-starter, Murgatroyd.

Don't *faff*, dear.
